From time to time we all experience in our spiritual businesses what I call ‘the trough’. It’s that period of time when the energy has slowed down to a trickle–remember, while it may FEEL like it has ground to a halt, energy never really stops moving, that’s basic physics. And the clients and money have slowed down to a trickle. It feels like a slump, like nothing’s happening. And this may be despite your best efforts….or at least what you hope are your best efforts.

If you’re a heart-centered business person this is when you might start meditating and visualizing and affirming…now don’t get me wrong, I do all of these regularly, but right now–don’t. Why? Well because much of the time these practices will be very powerful, but then there are those times that this can turn into some seriously passive navel-gazing, which is not helpful.

I’m a spiritual teacher so I’m not telling you to not be aware, or to numb out or conversely, turn into a white tornado, but I am saying that what you need to do is take grounded, informed action. Of course it has to be the right action or again, it will be more distraction than anything else, so here are those….

3 Simple Things To Do When Your Spiritual Business Is In A Slump:

1. Look at your ‘WHAT TO DO NEXT’ List. What’s that? You don’t have a ‘WHAT TO DO NEXT List? Well, you better make one, because when things are bogged down is a tough time to come up with a good ‘what to do next’ item, if you get my drift. We can definitely talk about what to put on that list–things like creating a survey to ask your people what they want and would buy from you and how they’d like it delivered, or writing an article about a powerful coaching session, or finding ways to Be the Source for others of the very thing you want for yourself, etc. Go see what item on your list is energetically appealing and act on it. It’s will get energy moving, which is the point.

2. This may seem contradictory, but take a breath and give it a minute. Spirit knows what you want. You’re being coached–you ARE being coached, right? And the Universe is holding all kinds of things in escrow for you. You’re clear about your niche. You stay in touch with your list, etc. so you are doing the ‘right’ things. And sometimes you just have to give the seeds you’ve planted a minute to germinate and pop above ground. This is where the big “T’ = TRUST comes in. So whether it’s counter-intuitive or not, R-E-L-A-X, go have some fun. Stress and compulsive activity never improved anything. One of our Soul to Soul Marketing mottos is “Relax to succeed” and this is partly what it’s about.

3. Dig deep into what’s going on in the rest of your life because you know, right, that wherever else you’re blocked, energetically it’s going to show up in your business….that’s how our holistic businesses keep us learning our spiritual lessons. At times this can be really annoying but it IS what you signed up for, your work being your path and all that jazz. So get honest about what you’re experiencing or struggling with in other parts of your life, and express, clear, do what will evolve you the most powerfully and watch the energy in your business reflect that! There are times when what I call “koffing up a hairball” is the best thing you can do to move out of the doldrums. This can be a very eye-opening, exciting process that leads to breakthroughs. I help clients with this all the time.

There’s lots more to discuss regarding dealing with a slump but having some markers, some suggestions you can keep handy in your back pocket to pull out when it’s hard to think, can be really comforting and helpful.

Don’t give up. Not that you would, spiritual-preneurs being among the most persistent, committed, ‘hang in there’ people I’ve ever met! But hang in there with Joy, with the knowing that the HOW of carrying out your mission IS being revealed to you….in Spirit’s time, and healing is happening in your business and in yourself.

I coached a client today who is an author/publisher and she talked about that regarding the first book she ever wrote many years ago, and she’s written a few since then. She said that when it gets published and put out into the world will be in Spirit’s time, not hers. She’s had those moments when she really, really wanted that to happen NOW, but she always surrendered, and these days it actually looks like this might be that time. I’m thinking that patience and surrender are two of the high spiritual lessons for the heart-centered entrepreneur.

I read this quote today on a food company’s snack packaging:

“A true north is a singular passion in life that can leave a legacy, empower others or make the world a more interesting place.”

I thought ‘how cool is this!’ as I read that their brand is “True North” (very yummy nutty snacks) and that their mission is very clear and has a nice, high vibe.

The true north concept is a great jumping-off point of inquiry for spiritual-preneurs who want to take their businesses to the next level this year…and in fact anyone who want to take his or her LIFE to the next level of purpose, service and success this year.

So here’s some of what I’d love to ask you and kick around if you were sitting with me pondering how to do that.

Have you thought about your true north?

Do you know what that singular passion is?

Would you investigate to find out?

And here are some of the questions I’d ask you to start the inquiry.

• What can you simply not imagine NOT doing in your life?

• Is the work you do something you would do anyway if it wasn’t work?

• Are you called to share or teach certain things that have been helpful or healing to you?

• Are people drawn to you for how you make them feel or what you make them aware of/teach them?

• How comfortable would you be if your life’s work was ‘singularly’ focused on your true north?

• How fulfilling and satisfying do you think that would be?

• Do you believe you could make a good living if your work was based in your true north?

• Are you already aware of your true north?

• Is your true north the center of the work you do?

• What if you never discovered your true north?

• Would you be willing to attempt to articulate your true north?

• Could you do that now?

• If not, what needs to be cleared in order to allow you to do this.

• How would you communicate to others what your true north is and the value and benefit of it?

These questions are meant to open a space for you to explore this concept. Your true north will lead you to your perfect students and clients. Your true north will offer you the grace of a purposeful life. Your true north will give you the effortlessness of work and service that flows from your true nature. Your true north lies within you awaiting discovery.

Will you investigate?

Finding and communicating and working from your true north is the spirit of Soul to Soul Marketing. It’s waaayyy too late for anything less. What is called for these days is the deepest levels of authenticity, genuineness and transparency.

The way I lead people to the discovery of their true north is with questions and concepts that tickle awareness. What I know is that you ALREADY know what it is. I will hold the lantern while you look.

If you are doing business the way you always have in the past, in ways that brought you clients, money, satisfaction and success in the past, you may have noticed that you’re not getting the same results you used to get.

That’s because you are truly in a new world. That’s a strong statement but look at what has happened recently, for example the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States of America almost one year ago.  The contrast created by what had come before this election helped people to wake up, become empowered, and choose something different. That’s how Barack Obama got elected by the people of America.

Americans realized that their ‘cheese’ been moved, ie., that their needs were not getting met by the status quo. Then they realized that they had a choice to go in a different direction, one that promised that they would be able to find their ‘cheese’ and their needs would be met more successfully than before with the help of someone they believed cared about them.

If you’re in business for yourself as a spiritual entrepreneur then you’re facing the same kind of choice, especially if you’re not enjoying the same kind of success that you used to enjoy. That’s what happened to me a few years ago–I was doing my highly successful business as usual and little by little my business dropped off, and kept dropping off, until there was virtually nothing going on energetically in my business. No clients, no money. Lots of frustration.

I had to look outside of the box conventional thinking and let go of the idea that the work that I used to do, in the way that I used to do it, was going to continue to bring me success and satisfaction and prosperity. Once I found alignment with a different aspect of my purpose, and a different way to deliver it, to a different group of people who really needed my help, then the energy started flowing like crazy again. Lots of clients, lots of money. And enormous satisfaction.

So here are some of the changes that have to be made if you’re going to succeed in this new world as a spirit-preneur:

• The energy of your business must flow from the Inside-Out
• Your way of serving must be authentic and natural
• Your way of connecting to the ones who need your help must be heartfelt
• Recognizing that Spirit has asked you to do something different is key
• Healing your old stories about service, business, and money is essential
• Compassion, connection, and service will be the hallmarks of your new business style
• It will be necessary to connect to your new clients from your own healing story
• You must offer your gifts and your talents freely to help others and not demand immediate return
• Trusting in the flow of universal energy and knowing that what you offer to others will be returned to you many times over will keep your stress down and your JOY up

There is a lot more that I could talk about, but this is enough to help you begin to shift from the old paradigm to the new paradigm of doing business in your spiritual enterprise.

Some of this may seem counter-intuitive and that’s because it challenges ego, and the scarcity thinking and the limiting beliefs that that may have run the show for a long time.

This is a time for the opening of your High Heart, the seat of your deep compassion the font of your service to your brothers and sisters, and so whatever seems counterintuitive, whatever challenges ego, is an opportunity for you to open that High Heart chakra and operate your spiritual enterprise from a vastly different energy basis.

 I’ve been thinking about writing about this for a while now. I encounter so many gifted spiritual-preneurs who are stressed, suffering and confused about what to do about their slumping businesses. They feel dis-empowered, lost and inept. Not good feelings.

Here’s the thing. The suffering is never about what you think it’s about. Never. It’s always about you and your soul’s path…and what stands in the way. What you are resisting, even unconsciously.

 But when it comes to business, especially for spiritual business owners, I think because you’ve been conditioned to believe that you’re not so good at the business end of things, you tend to mystify it. And maybe even be intimidated by it.

It’s not a mystery and it’s not intimidating…. it’s an extension of you and your awakening process. You know that things are speeding up these days with respect to shifts in consciousness. But it’s possible that you tend to compartmentalize that reality.

What if what’s true is that as you evolve spiritually, so must your spiritual enterprise? I mean think about it. How could your spiritual business NOT evolve along with you?

Look, I experienced this blind spot as much as anybody. My cheese had definitely been moved but I didn’t realize it. I was coming out of a period of intense spiritual awakening but I didn’t connect it with the notion that maybe my spiritual business needed to evolve along with me. I just kept expecting that I could do the same work I had done for years and loved, no problem.

While those of you who know me know that that was not the case, perhaps some of you don’t know that. But it’s true–I mean I had been in business for a couple of decades very, very, very successfully… and then it all dried up. My cheese had definitely been moved! I just didn’t know it because it wasn’t the way I was used to viewing my business. While it’s true that I definitely started different projects over the years and enjoyed learning new things and teaching new things, the thought of a real change in direction was not in my mindset. My rational mind would have viewed that as “starting over” and not gone for it at all!

What’s true for me now, is that because of the intense spiritual growth that I experienced over the past few years (that would be my latest awakening! lol) and because I was willing to hire a dynamite coach who helped me get clarity, I’m now doing work that is very different from the work I was doing before. The fabulous thing is that it brings all of me to the table in a much more yin/yang kind of way. And it challenges me in ways that help to keep the evolving energy moving forward.

 I’m able to bring the deep transformative energy-shifting spiritual work that is my gift, along with everything I’ve learned about how to do business on the Internet, and put it all together in a way that is totally heart and soul-based.

• If you find yourself with the energy of your spiritual enterprise sluggish.
• If you find yourself in a slump with your healing or coaching business.
• If you’re frustrated because you’re not helping more people and making more money.

Then perhaps it’s time for you to catch your business up with your soul’s evolution in the same way that you have to catch your personality up with your soul’s evolution.

More people are available to work on the level that you’re offering. The explosion of social media gives you an opportunity to reach people you never could have reached even five years ago. So much has changed.

I walk from my bedroom to my home office in the mornings and think to myself “this doesn’t FEEL like work. I LOVE what I’m doing! And things are going great!” My work is a very natural extension of who I am.

Do you do the same thing? Or are you struggling, working way to hard, not getting the results you want? Do you know things could be a whole lot better…but don’t know how to make that happen?

It wasn’t always this way for me. I had had a long, successful career as a spiritual psychotherapist, and then another very successful career as a spiritual life coach. And then things dried up.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that my “cheese” had been moved. You know that book from a number of years ago, Who Moved My Cheese? Well, I wasn’t thinking that way. I didn’t KNOW my cheese had been moved. I just kept struggling, banging away in the same old ways that had worked before.

But the clients and the money weren’t coming. No energy was moving. And all the while I kept hearing myself say, disbelievingly, “I’m dead in the water!”. It created such dissonance for someone like me who had been successful for so long. I felt pretty lost and confused….and what’s worse, powerless.

But, I kept my head down, writing books, creating online courses, doing teleclasses, seeing my existing clients, etc, etc, etc but no one new was showing up! I was frustrated, but I kept on keeping on. My husband would say to me, “Have faith, it’s gonna happen!” but I did have my doubts. The good thing is I did keep on doing what I knew to do. The bad thing was I was creating all this stuff for where my ‘cheese’ USED TO BE.

It wasn’t until I began to work with my coach that things got clear. Yes, my cheese HAD been moved! And she helped me to see outside of the box, and understand where it had been moved to. Once that was in place, the energy faucet was turned on! The client faucet was turned on! And the money faucet was turned on too. Big time! Because I made the mindset shift to be in alignment with where my ‘cheese’ was now…and the funny thing is…I was already in alignment with it, I just didn’t see that! I’d had inklings, but not clarity.

The feeling of work now is play for me. Really! When you are 100% aligned with where your “cheese” (read: clients) is, then you can communicate with them, speak to their pain, and give them hope that if they work with you, they can get out of their pain and back into their Joy, Success, Abundance. And you can do all this without struggle and stress. Because it comes naturally and authentically from who you really are.

You actually get to help people and make money and feel great about it.
